SOUTH BREWSTER COUNTY—Whitson Chile Products has won a second Golden Chile first-place trophy, as well as a second place ribbon, at the 2011 Fiery Food Challenge in Arlington. In 2009 Whitson’s Candied Heat jalapenos won the trophy; this year it was Terlingua Sweet Hots spicy pickles picking up the gold. Whitson’s Bee Stings Spicy Honey Mustard Salad Dressing and Marinade took the red ribbon.
The Fiery Food Challenge takes place as part of Zest Fest, a show, market, and celebration of all things spicy that is sponsored annually by Chile Pepper Magazine. Hundreds of products from dozens of companies compete in a number of categories, from salsa to barbecue sauce to Bloody Mary mix, and the competition is stiff.
“Winning a second Golden Chile award is very gratifying for us,” says Whitson’s owner, Sarah Whitson Bourbon of Terlingua. “It shows we are on the right track and producing products that appeal to experienced, sophisticated judges,” she added. “We are planning to bring out at least one new product for the chile-loving public this year.”
Also as a result of Zest Fest, Whitson’s has landed a new retail outlet: Foreman, Inc., in Colleyville. Other stores and chains are in discussions to carry the piquante products. Whitson’s Moist Chili Seasoning has been available at Central Market stores since 2005, and more recently at many Spec’s liquor and gourmet stores.
