SOUTH BREWSTER COUNTY— For those who like it hot, Whitson Chile Products of Terlingua introduces Whitson’s Candied Heat. The sliced jalapeņo pickles join the company’s other spicy products— Whitson’s Moist Chili Seasoning and Terlingua Sweet Hots. To paraphrase the company motto, if it’s not spicy, why eat it?
Heat is something that most Texans care a great deal about, whether it is their weather or their food. After all, a good sweat achieved by eating hot peppers is a great way to cool off. And your body reacts to the fire by flooding your bloodstream with natural pain killers called endorphins, which feels kind of good. And chiles are good for you! What more reason do you need to reach for the heat?
Almost everyone who samples Whitson’s products, at the many fairs and trade shows where the company sets up shop, asks about heat: How hot is it? Or Don’t you have anything hotter? To answer that demand, the company’s owner, Sarah Whitson Bourbon of Terlingua, created Whitson’s Candied Heat. They are a sweet, garlicky jalapeņo pickle.
The new product is available on the company web site, www.whitsonschile.com, and at stores in Denton (Whitson’s starting point), in West Texas, and Spec’s Liquors and Gourmet stores in Austin. Whitson’s Moist Chili Seasoning is available at all Central Market Stores as well. In fact, jalapeņo lovers in Europe may get to enjoy Whitson’s Candied Heat sooner than chile fans in Texas do. The company’s distributor in Oslo, Norway, bought up an entire run for Scandinavia, where they are currently headed. Norway has already developed quite a taste for Terlingua Sweet Hots jalapeņo-flavored sweet pickles.
