SOUTH BREWSTER COUNTY—Whitson Chile Products of Terlingua was recognized for its Terlingua Sweet Hots jalapeño-flavored pickles at the Fiery Food Challenge during Zest Fest this year in Fort Worth. The event, held at the Will Rogers Coliseum, is sponsored by Chile Pepper magazine and attracts thousands of folks who are in thrall to capsaicin peppers.
"We received a grant from the Texas Department of Agriculture’s Go Texan program for advertising this year and one of the places we advertise is Chile Pepper," says Whitson's President Sarah Whitson Bourbon. "I have been a reader of the magazine for years; it is probably the best national publication for news, recipes, and sources for all things hot," she added. So it seemed reasonable to set up a booth at the magazine’s event and distribute samples of both the pickles and the company’s other product, Whitson's Moist Chili Seasoning. The Go Texan membership also provided a substantial discount on the registration fee.
Zest Fest roars along for three days with the first one given over solely to people in the food business. That's where contacts are made and deals contemplated. The doors are thrown open after that to the public as well, with attendance in the many thousands. The competition of the Fiery Food Challenge happens on Saturday evening and prizes are awarded in dozens of categories. Terlingua Sweet Hots was awarded Second Place in the category for hot cucumber pickles.
Both the pickles and chili seasoning, plus gift baskets and Terlingua-themed merchandise, are available for sale on the company web site, www.whitsonschile.com, and from stores around Texas. A list of locations can be found on the web site.
